Is The A Difference Between The Term Cryo and CO2, C02 and co2?

There are essentially two types of CO2 cryo products, portable and stage mounted.  The portable CO2 gun or Cryo Gun is the one you see an individual holding and spraying white CO2 fog in to the crowd.  These units do not require any power and are manually operated by squeezing a valve to release the liquid CO2.  The mounted CO2 Jets are products that you see mounted to the front of stages, on trusses, on the side of buildings, and more.  These units do require power and are generally fired with DMX, Relay, or Simple On/Off switch.  You can also you push button control boxes.  Please note all the products fall under special effects category and are used for special fx only.

Now lets take an in depth look at the different labels and how easily they can be confused.  Have you ever seen someone label their unit "C02" (using a zero instead of the letter "O") The chemical label for Carbon Dioxide is CO2.  You may have seen just the words "Cryo" without the label CO2.  This could mean any product capable of using a "Cryogenic" product and you may be on a Nitrogen system website.  It is also possible that you could be on a medical website as some physicians use "Cryo Guns" for freezing skin defects off.

So be sure you are searching CO2 for products that use the more affordable Liquid CO2. Customer FAQ Answer: Why Do I Not See The Plume Of White Fog From My Cryo Gun?

Why No Plume Of Fog?  This question just came in from a client in Europe and we thought we would share the answer to educate other CO2 gun users.  CO2 jets and handheld CO2 fog guns are virtually fail proof if you purchase from a reputable company.  If you have installed your CO2 fog system and upon firing it for the first time all you heard was a loud noise and felt a rush of cold air, a couple of things could have happened.  Below are the things to check:

1. Make Sure The Gas Company Supplied You With A Syphon (Siphon) Tube CO2 Tank
• Often the CO2 company will confuse the tank to supply you because they are used to supplying nightclubs with regular CO2 gas for soda guns.
• Your tank should be properly marked with either etching on the side that says (Syphon Tube) or if you use www.Airgas.com the top of the tank will be painted red to signify it is a Syphon tube tank. 
2. Make Sure Your CO2 Tank Is Not Empty
• In the gas supply industry they have a margin for error that allows CO2 tanks to be a few pounds heavy, or light.  (Of course for CO2 jet and CO2 handheld blasters, we definitely need it be heavy and not light)
• One option is to request each tank be weighed before delivery to ensure proper tank weight
• You might ask how do I know if the tank is empty?  You might notice the tank started out firing a huge dense plume of fog but after a short period of time it only made a loud noise.  This is an idicator that the tank is empty of liquid, but still contains CO2 gas under high pressure.  (It is time to change your tank to a new one)

CO2 Cryo Jets Keep Tongue And Groove Even Cooler with UFC in Atlanta

In case you missed it last weekend the UFC was welcomed into Atlanta with open arms.  Phillips arena hosted what was quite possibly the most anticipated fight of all time between champion John Jones and contender Rashad Evans.  To kick off the event one of the Atlanta hot spots Tongue and Groove invited one of Atlanta's own, Spencer Phillips, to bring a crew of his UFC buddies through for a fun night on the town. Atlanta Special FX was there in full effect to help keep the place cool with a couple of the high pressure CO2 jets and the popular handheld CO2 cryo guns. If you were at Tongue and groove and glanced into the VIP you would have seen intense blasts of super cold white fog on the faces, Ryan Bader, Gray Maynard, Aaron Simpson, Chris Weidman, Clay Harvison and even GSP; thats right even Georges St Pierre.  Atlanta Special FX owner Michael Willett commented "We are glad to help those who help support our company and products, so when Spencer asked me to bring something that would excite the crowd, I knew they needed some CO2 cryo jets." How To Install A CO2 Cryo Jet by Atlanta Special FX

If you have never installed a CO2 cryo jet system it may seem like a daunting task.  After you read through this short paragraph you will know all the ins and outs of installing your own CO2 cryo system with either high pressure tanks or low pressure Dewar tanks.  All the pros in the special effects world understand it doesn't take years of experience to install the CO2 cryo jets manufactured by Atlanta Special FX.  These cryo blasters are engineered to save you time and money.  They can be mounted in a variety of positions allowing for easy setup in all types of venues. 

If you notice on the photo to the left the lower, and back, mounting plates are designed to use screws for mounting to the floor, wall, and ceiling.  The multi mounting points allow the CO2 units to be installed right side up, lefts side, right side and upside down.  It also includes a pre drilled hole for easy mounting to a truss system using a J-clamp or C-clamp.  Once you have decided on your mounting the next thing to do is consider the location of your tanks in relation to your cryo nozzles.  Ideally you will want to keep your tanks as close to the CO2 jets as possible and always use tested and approved cryo hosing.  With that in mind, here are some general guidelines (NOT REQUIREMENTS) you will want to follow with your hose lengths:

1. Do your best to stay at 50-70 feet or less from your tanks when using low pressure Dewar tanks. (Closer is better)
2. Try to keep a direct line between your cryo jets and your tanks.  (The less 90 degree turns the better)
3. When using high pressure tanks you can use longer hoses (But if the CO2 sets in the hoses for extended periods of time between shots you will experience the noise before the white fog comes out)
4. It is optional to use T fittings and attach multiple jets to a single hose.

Now that you have decided the location of tanks and the location of cryo jets, you will need to distinguish between the cryo hose ends to determine which hooks to which.  The brass end is a standard CO2 fitting and attaches to the liquid CO2 bottle and the silver end attaches to the cryo jet.  Once you have attached your hoses you will now need to determine how you will power the jets on and off.  Most industry professionals use a 4 channel DMX dimmer / switch kit. (Sold Separately).  Others use items such as foot switches, push button firing systems, and even as manual as a surge protector.  The cryo jets only need a simple on off signal.  When the jet is on, CO2 plumes of fog will shoot from the nozzle and when they are off there will be no noise or fog.  The last things you will want to do are test fire the jets, without the gas on, listening for the clicking on/off sound.  Once you have tested the on/off it is time open your CO2 bottle.  Be sure the cryo unit is off, open the valve on top of the CO2 bottle all the way and the line will pressurize.  It is always good practice to leave the bottle closed until just before you need the effect.  This will ensure a nice, instant plume of fog when you power the CO2 fogger on.

CO2 fog is a great way to entertain your guests as well as provide stunning visual and audible effects while cooling the room down.  This is why CO2 foggers are a popular item for any nightclub venue.
